PLEASE NOTE:
"Poisonous" does not mean deadly. Some manifestations of toxicity are subtle. The dose, as always, determines if a plant is safe source of nutrients or a toxic hazard.

BRIEF: Are acorns toxic to dogs?

QUESTION:
I HAVE AN EIGHT MONTH OLD PUPPY WHO EATS EVERYTHING HE CAN GET TO. WE STILL DO NOT LET HIM OUT IN THE BACKYARD WITH HIM ON A LEASH SO THAT WE CAN TRY TO KEEP HIM FROM EATING EVERYTHING. HE IS A CAIRN TERRIER. SOME OF THE BOOKS I HAVE SAY THAT ACORNS ARE TOXIC TO DOGS. I'M JUST CURIOUS SINCE SQUIRRELS AND OTHER ANIMALS EAT THEM. ARE THEY DEADLY FOR DOGS?

ANSWER:

A few acorns won't hurt them, but alot will interfere with protein digestion and high intakes may lead to gastro intestinal distress or worse.
