PLEASE NOTE:
"Poisonous" does not mean deadly. Some manifestations of toxicity are subtle. The dose, as always, determines if a plant is safe source of nutrients or a toxic hazard.

BRIEF: Is Spathiphyllum poisonous?

QUESTION:
I just wanted to make sure that Spathiphyllum was not a poisonous plant -- I do have a toddler around that seems to eat everything in site!

ANSWER:

There is no record of poisoning with this plant, but since it contains calcium oxide raphides, anyone chewing on it would be expected to suffer pain, swelling and irritation of the mouth and anything near it (like the lips, tongue and throat). I don't know if anyone has suffered this fate, but I am certain that no one would try it twice!
