BRIEF: Could vitamins cause a loss of taste and smell?

QUESTION:
My mother who is 84 years old is in good health and takes vitamins regularly. She has not been able to taste her food as well as she should and it has been affecting the amount she eats. Could this possibly be related to the number or combination of vitamins she is taking?

ANSWER:

Loss of taste and smell is common with advancing age, and I am not familiar with vitamins that would further diminish it. If you hear of any, let me know! Sometimes high levels of niacin used to control cholesterol cause flushing or numbness or rashes or other nervous symptoms, but I don't know about loss of taste or smell.
