PLEASE NOTE:
"Poisonous" does not mean deadly. Some manifestations of toxicity are subtle. The dose, as always, determines if a plant is safe source of nutrients or a toxic hazard.

BRIEF: What kind of reaction should I look for in a baby who chewed a philodendreon leaf?

QUESTION:
I have heard that the house plant I know as a "philodendron" is also toxic. What can you tell me about this plant, and what kind of reaction should I look for in a baby who has chewed on one of its leaves?

ANSWER:

Pain, swelling and irritation in and around the mouth, crying and (we hope) a reluctance to chew on other house plants in the future.
